I was sad to see Tom Petty leave us a few weeks ago, his ‘Old Grey Whistle Test’ appearances were incredible and something I always go back to. Anyway, as usually happens when a prolific artist dies there’s a rash of musical tributes and in the case of our little niche, a tonne of edits. Most of them, while well intentioned, are poor to say the least but you get the odd gem. Today’s edit is one such gem, Ryan Kick has taken Tom Petty’s two minute track ‘Breakdown’ and extended and dubbed it over the horizon. It’s a beautiful thing full of haunting echoes and ‘that’ guitar lick. Tom’s vocals barely make an appearance, but maybe that’s apt, this is what his music sounds like without him.
